Where’s The Black-On-Black Love On Medical Dramas?

December 10, 2008

So I’m watching House last night, and in what surely deserves a nomination for “Least Surprising Story Development”, it’s revealed at the end of the episode that Dr. Foreman (Omar Epps) and Thirteen (Olivia Wilde) are in fact a sexy chocolate/vanilla swirl cone of LOVE!! And it made me think of other medical dramas, and how frequently the black doctors are paired up with non-black love interests. I guess the hospital doesn’t keep vaccines on-hand for all the jungle fever that’s allowed to spread rampant throughout the facilities. A few examples if you’ll indulge me:

Dr. Peter Benton & Dr. Elizabeth Corday (ER)
This one is punctuated by Benton’s lousy luck with black women, more than anything. Dr. Jeanie Boulet ended up catching the AIDS from her construction worker husband who was having an extra-marital affair, and feared she had infected Benson during THEIR extra-marital affair. Then there was Carla, the mother of Peter’s deaf child. But she was played like your typical “baby mama”, and pretty much an angry bitch eight days a week, up until she died in a car crash. Benton and Corday’s relationship was decidedly more mellow by comparison, and ended rather amicably.

Dr. Gregory Pratt & Dr. Jing-Mei Chen (ER)
Pratt just loved da ladies in general. I think anyone was pretty much fair game as far as he was concerned. Chen, on the other hand, seemed to have a thing for the brothas. She’d ultimately get pregnant by another black man she was dating either before or after Pratt (I can’t remember), but gave that harmony baby up for adoption to a black and Chinese couple. When Pratt finally decided to settle down, and with a fine little nubian, no less, he’s killed off in one of the most agonizing death scenes I’ve ever seen on ER!! I swear, his death scene lasted the ENTIRE FUCKING EPISODE! He didn’t even die completely on his own, suffering brain death first.

Dr. Preston Burke & Dr. Cristina Yang (Grey’s Anatomy)
These two almost got hitched! That’s progress as far as black-on-non-black love on a medical drama! But then Isaiah Washington had to be a dick  and get kicked off the show, thus making his character even more of a dick, by leaving Dr. Yang at the altar!

Dr. Michael Gallant & Dr. Neela Rosgotra (ER again?!?! WTF?!?!)
Admittedly, this one’s a bit of a reach . At the end of the day, they’re both essentially brown! In any event, they played this one really slow. I swear, glaciers moved faster than these two. Mind you, I always wanted Neela to end up with Dr. Ray Barnett anyway, but him losing his legs kinda put a damper on those proceedings. Neela and Gallant would ultimately find love and got married after Gallant returned from a tour of duty in Iraq as a military surgeon. But for whatever boneheaded reason (civic duty, honor. . .pfft!!), Gallant wants to go right back into the suck to help the troops. What?!? Fine as hell British-Indian wife or the twice-daily risk of gettin’ blown to smithereens while you’re on a Porto-John? It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out how that went!

And it’s not going to end, anytime soon. Not that I’m angry about it, or anything. I’m just making an observation. I’m axiously awaiting the further misadventures of Foreman and Thirteen on House, and clearly ER is setting doctors Archie Morris and Cate Banfield up for some off-duty lovin’. From their first rage-filled meeting, it was so abundantly clear that they’d be getting it on, one of the writers should have walked into the scene and said, “And by the way, they are SO gonna do it!”.
