Let’s Face It, Their Careers Have Been Pretty Much Leading Up To This

March 5, 2009

According to Upcoming Film Scores, the popular electronica/dance duo Daft Punk will be providing the score for Tron 2.0, the sequel to the 1982 film starring Jeff Bridges. Seems like an obvious choice, but certainly not a bad one. While I’m still waiting for them to get back to more of their house music roots, I’ve been more than happy with the material they’ve come out with since their album Discovery. And given their various filmmaking side projects like Interstellar 5555 and Electroma, their approach to music definitely lends itself to a film-based narrative.

I just find it interesting that a new Tron film is even being made, especially over 25 years after the fact. Despite its groundbreaking use of computer animation, it wasn’t exactly heaped with praise when it first came out, and was hardly the box office smash Disney wanted it to be. The subsequent video game based on the movie actually made more money! But over time, it’s clearly found enough of an audience to create demand for a follow-up. And fans sure went apeshits when this mock teaser featuring Jeff Bridges was presented at San Diego Comic-Con a while back (the sequel is only in pre-production at the moment, and won’t see release until 2011):
