C’mon Final Destination, Don’t Make The Same Mistake as 2Fast 2Furious!

June 30, 2010

I’m wondering when Hollywood is going to realize that no one really finds it all that clever when they replace letters in film titles with numbers to signify a new installment in a franchise. More often than not, it makes sequels look obnoxious and feel even more disingenuous than they already are. It’s even worse when the franchise in question has long since jumped the shark. Apparently, Final Destination doesn’t want to learn from the mistakes of others, giving us 5nal Destination, coming out next summer on August 26th, 2011 (my freakin’ birthday?! FML!!).

The great thing about Final Destination was that it went against the grain, when every other new age slasher film was trying (and usually failing) to copy Scream (which may also be doing the “swap a letter for a number” thing). It had a great concept, and actually managed to have a sequel that expanded on that concept. But then original director James Wong returned for number three and put another notch towards proving that his success with the first film was a total fluke (The One was the first, with Dragonball Evolution being the third, after FD3).

The series has long since devolved into run-of-the-mill slasher flicks, where nothing is more important than coming up with new and more fucked up ways to turn teenagers into fruit filling for Pop-Tarts. All I know is, I’m waiting for the installment where a teen predicts a bloody disaster involving a group of tourists on Segways!
